The Italian National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO) has preliminarily suspended long time Italian amateur cyclist Riccardo Salani, 58, after he allegedly violated anti-doping rules by not submitting a biological sample.

Salani, who just joined team G.S. Baglini after riding for Team Stefan last year, is accused of violating World Anti-Doping Article 2.3 and either intentionally or negligently failing to submit an anti-doping test sample when ordered to do so by a NADO doping control officer.

Recent UISP (Unione Italiana Sport Per tutti) results show Salani finishing 11th in the Men’s 55-59 category at the Classica del Parrana di Lorenzana road race on 6 April, while he also has numerous podium appearances stretching back almost twenty years.

Evading sample collection or refusing or failing to provide a sample without compelling justification is considered an anti-doping rule violation by NADO Italia and the International Cycling Union (UCI), both of which have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code. Amateur cyclists found guilty of an Article 2.3 violation face up to a two year ban from sport.

Salini joins a long list of senior citizen cyclists recently charged with violating Article 2.3, including 65 year-old former USA national champion John Frey, 53 year-old Sicilian hillclimb champion Flavio Mallus and 54 year-old Italian Luca Bartolucci.
