Amateur cyclists traveled to Perpignan on the French Mediterranean this weekend to try and qualify for the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships by finishing in the top 25% of their age/gender category in time trial and fondo road races.
116 riders participated in a 12.5km time trial, with 24 year-old Belgian Julien Desmarets (Stageco Cycling Team) clocking the fastest time of 29:39. Achille Metro (30:56) and Lucas Vignes (31:11) completed the podium. The French Aurore Pauchet (CSM Puteaux) was the fastest woman, with the 29 year-old stopping the clock in 36:41.
Julien Desmarets continued his winning ways in the 192km gran fondo, winning in 5:36:55, with Benjamin Buchetet (5:36:58) and Damien Degot (5:37:41) next. Amelie Barbetta out-sprinted Laetitia Condouret to win for the women in 6:57:57. A total of 248 cyclists completed the challenging route.
Julien Subils (3:53:56) and Miryam Nunez (3:59:52) won the men’s and women’s 138km medio fondo from a field of 626 participants.
