Alberto Bruttomesso, a 22-year-old Italian sprinter with Bahrain Victorious, has been provisionally suspended in an anti-doping case, Italy’s National Anti-Doping Tribunal announced on Wednesday 30 September 2026.
The tribunal acted on a request from the national anti-doping prosecutor, citing Articles 2.1 and 2.2, which cover the presence of a prohibited substance and its use or attempted use. The announcement did not give the date, substance or method involved.
While suspended, Bruttomesso is prohibited from participating in sanctioned competition or activity.
Bahrain Victorious said it fully supports Bruttomesso and will cooperate with the authorities. The team has also suspended him from all team activities until a final outcome. He has not raced since the Deutschland Tour in mid-August and is under contract through 2027. Bruttomesso has not yet commented publicly.
Born in Valdagno on 30 October 2003, Bruttomesso began his amateur career with the prominent Zalf cycling team and showed considerable promise. He won a stage of the 2022 Giro d’Italia Next Gen, moved to the developmental Cycling Team Friuli in 2023 and joined the Bahrain Victorious WorldTour team in 2024. He has yet to win as a professional, with his best result a third place on Stage 4 of China’s Tour of Guangxi in his debut season.
A provisional suspension is not a finding of guilt. Gran Fondo Daily News reported the same principle in a separate case this week involving another Italian, amateur masters racer Gianluca Usai, charged under the same articles. Usai can defend himself before the tribunal, which will make the final decision.
For Italian cycling, which has seen a number of doping cases involving both professional and amateur riders in recent years, the news is another reminder that anti-doping authorities continue to face an ongoing challenge in protecting the integrity of the sport.
