Organizers of the UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying race in Chile, working with the UCI and the municipality of Lago Ranco, have cancelled this weekend’s Gran Fondo Chile due to extreme weather.

The Gran Fondo, a qualifier for the 2027 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, was scheduled for Sunday 04 October. Organizers say days of persistent rain, strong winds, flooding and low temperatures in the Los Ríos Region have damaged roads in the region, with forecasts showing no improvement. They add that UCI protocols consider such conditions unsafe for cycling in any discipline.

Official warnings support the decision. Chile’s disaster-response agency SENAPRED recently declared a regional yellow alert for heavy rain and landslide risk as a category 3-4 atmospheric river rolls into Southern Chile. Forecasters expected 70 to 100 millimetres of rain in the foothills around Lago Ranco over the weekend, with possible tornadic clouds in Los Ríos on Friday and Saturday.

The 114-kilometre Gran Fondo was to make one hilly loop of the lake, with 1,554 metres of climbing. Riders finishing in the top 25 percent of their age and gender category, based on the number of starters, would have earned starting places at the 2027 Worlds in France.

Organizers are waiting for the municipality to confirm a new date with the UCI so the event may be rescheduled.
