Seven days after both featured prominently at the Ötztaler Radmarathon, Janine Meyer and Miguel Brugger backed up those performances with wins at the sixth Kitzbüheler Radmarathon in Austria on Sunday, with the brutal Gebrüder Weiss KRM Klassik course — 216 kilometres capped by a summit finish on the notoriously steep Kitzbüheler Horn — once again separating the contenders from the field of 1,595 finishers.
Meyer, a 48-year-old German rider based in Cologne, arrived off the back of her fourth Ötztaler title on Sunday 30 August, where she shaved roughly seven minutes off her own course record to stop the clock at 07:15:46 over the event’s 227-kilometre, four-pass route. She carried that momentum straight into Kitzbühel, soloing to victory in 06:35:30, beating German teammate Julia Jedelhauser — also her closest challenger at Ötztaler — by 13 minutes 35 seconds, with the Italian Julia Tanner finishing third.
Brugger’s turnaround was just as sharp, if less decorated. The 24 year-old Tyrolean and former World Cup luger finished third at Ötztaler in 06:33:57, 4 minutes 36 seconds behind race winner Jack Burke, then returned to Kitzbühel to take the overall win in 06:07:18, holding off next125 Hackl-Lebensräume teammates Rene Pammer and Christian Oberngruber, who finished 1 minute 25 seconds down in that order to complete an all Austrian podium.
Launched in 2020 by the organisers of the professional Tour of Austria, the Kitzbüheler Radmarathon loops over the Thurn Pass and past the Krimml Waterfalls before its Horn finale, whose closing kilometres — averaging 15% gradient, with ramps up to 25% — are among the steepest paved roads in the country.
