British long-course triathlete Joe Skipper, 38, has been banned for 18 months after the International Testing Agency (ITA) confirmed an anti-doping rule violation for three whereabouts failures within a 12-month period.

The International Hearing Panel (IHP) ruled on Monday 17 August 2026 that Skipper committed an anti-doping rule violation under Article 2.4 of the IRONMAN Anti-Doping Rules after failing to properly log his whereabouts for out-of-competition testing between 01 July 2024 and 15 May 2025. Skipper has been part of the IRONMAN Registered Testing Pool since January 2016.

A whereabouts failure is not a positive drug test. Athletes in a Registered Testing Pool must provide a daily 60-minute window and location where they can be found for unannounced out-of-competition testing. A “strike” is recorded either as a filing failure, when whereabouts information is missing or inaccurate, or a missed test, when a doping control officer arrives during the declared window and cannot locate the athlete. Under WADA-aligned rules, any combination of three such strikes within a 12-month period constitutes an anti-doping rule violation, regardless of whether a prohibited substance was ever detected.

The suspension is backdated to 18 May 2026, the date of his hearing, and runs for 18 months. All results since 15 May 2025 are disqualified, including his second-place finish at IRONMAN South Africa and his 26th-place finish at the 2025 IRONMAN World Championship in Nice.

Skipper, a seven-time IRONMAN champion and former UK 12-hour time trial record holder, announced his retirement from racing on 09 July 2026, four weeks before the panel’s decision was made public. In a video posted to social media, he said he had “never used banned substances” and pointed to more than 40 career doping controls, attributing the violations to “poor organisation” rather than intent.

He retains the right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, as do IRONMAN, WADA and UK Anti-Doping.
