A father-son act stole the spotlight at El Giro de Rigo’s sold-out debut in the coastal city of Manta, Ecuador on Sunday 16 August, as 15-year-old Matías Guamá won the men’s 90km race in 02:34:23 while his father, veteran Ecuadorian pro Byron Guamá, took third in the men’s 120km.
The elder Guamá, 41, has spent more than two decades racing professionally, including stints with Movistar, while winning the Vuelta al Ecuador and the Ecuadorian national road title twice each. His son Matías, who turned 15 this year, is already following in his father’s footsteps: he rides for Team Best PC, represented Ecuador at the Vuelta a la Juventud de Guatemala this season, and has described himself as one of the country’s few dedicated time-trial specialists, with ambitions of eventually reaching WorldTour level.
On Sunday, the younger Guamá used his time-trial skills to hold off Jason Jacome Lopez and Joel Alejandro Jiménez Porras, who crossed together six seconds later to take second and third place. In the women’s 90km, Carolina Torres Proaño won by 10 seconds over Norma Carolina Chavez Campuzano, with Priscila Encalada third, 2 minutes 15 seconds back.
Overall honors on the longer 120km route went to 21-year-old Jacob White, who clocked 03:05:01 to beat William Tobay by 19 seconds and Byron Guamá by 30 seconds. White carries a genuine competitive pedigree beyond the gran fondo circuit, having placed 10th in Ecuador’s national under-23 time-trial championship and finished 21st overall at the Vuelta al Ecuador.
The women’s 120km field was topped by Diana Cano in 03:26:35, with Emilia Astudillo Crausaz second, 3 minutes 21 seconds back. Gabriela Moreira took third, 11 minutes 37 seconds behind Cano.
Over 3,000 riders filled the sold-out starting grid for the event founded by retired Colombian pro Rigoberto Urán, marking the series’ third stop in Ecuador after Cuenca and Quito.
