A week after being struck by a hit-and-run driver, longtime Las Vegas cyclist Richard Broome is recovering from serious injuries and facing an uncertain path back to the sport he loves.
Broome was riding through the intersection of Count Deiro Drive and Hualapai Way in the city’s Summerlin area while training on Sunday 09 August at around 7:14 a.m. when a car travelling in the opposite direction turned left directly into his path. He had no time to stop or avoid the vehicle. The violent impact threw him from his bike, leaving him lying in the middle of the road with a fractured vertebra in his neck, along with additional broken bones and cuts.
The driver did not stop.
Broome said he briefly made eye contact with the driver, whom he described as a middle-aged woman with wavy brown hair driving a red, boxy vehicle with a distinctive rectangular grille.
A passing motorist stopped to help him before paramedics arrived and took him to University Medical Center. Broome, an active cyclist who has logged thousands of miles annually for more than a decade, said the possibility of not riding again weighs on him as heavily as the physical pain. Police say they are reviewing nearby surveillance footage, but no arrest has been made.
The case adds to a painful history for cyclists in the Las Vegas area. In December 2020, five amateur riders were killed south of the city when a truck ploughed into a group ride near Searchlight. The driver was later convicted on DUI-related charges and imprisoned. In 2023, BMX champion Nathan Miller was killed when an unlicensed and uninsured driver with 19 previous motor-vehicle violations struck him from behind. The driver was not arrested until four weeks later, after video footage surfaced appearing to show him travelling at twice the speed limit before the crash.
