The Birmingham Bicycle Club is grieving the loss of one of its own after a fatal collision claimed the life of a well-known local cyclist while he was out on an early-morning ride on Monday 17 August 2026.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Stuart Elliott Roberts, 65, of Mountain Brook, Alabama. According to authorities, the crash occurred at approximately 5:53 a.m. in the 2800 block of Crestwood Boulevard in Irondale. The driver of the vehicle involved reportedly stopped, and emergency responders pronounced Roberts dead at the scene.

Irondale police are leading the investigation, though further details about the circumstances of the crash have not yet been released.

Roberts was a longtime and active member of the Birmingham Bicycle Club, where friends and fellow riders describe him as a generous, enthusiastic and welcome presence on every group ride — often buying cool drinks for the group on Alabama’s hottest summer days.

Roberts’ death comes just three weeks after another fatal roadside collision involving a cyclist in Alabama. On Monday 27 July 2026, 30-year-old Samuel Ryár of Slovakia was killed after being struck from behind while riding in nearby Salem. Ryár was reportedly attempting a cross-country ride from California to Georgia when the pre-dawn collision occurred. The circumstances surrounding that crash remain under investigation by Alabama State Troopers.

The two incidents, occurring within weeks of each other, highlight the dangers faced by cyclists on Alabama’s roads, particularly during early-morning hours when visibility is limited.
