Colorado Springs ultra-endurance racer Alyssa Secreto, 35, was seriously injured on Thursday 02 July 2026 after being struck by a vehicle traveling an estimated 50-60 mph, roughly 60 miles from the finish of the 2026 Tour Divide in New Mexico.
The collision happened around 4:30 AM as Secreto pushed through the closing stretch of the 2,745-mile self-supported race, which follows the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route from Banff, Alberta, to Antelope Wells, New Mexico. At the time, she was riding in second place in the women’s field, just days after winning the 365-mile Grand Loop ultra-race in early June.
Secreto sustained life-threatening injuries, including eight fractured vertebrae, six cracked ribs, a broken arm, internal bleeding, a brain bleed, and lacerations to her kidney, spleen, and liver. She was airlifted from the crash site to a hospital in El Paso, Texas, where she is receiving medical treatment. Her bicycle was destroyed in the impact.
Secreto is no stranger to the Tour Divide’s demands. A Chicago native, now living in Colorado Springs, Colorado, she took up cycling as an inexpensive means of transportation before discovering ultra-distance racing. She made her Tour Divide debut in 2024—remarkably, only her third-ever bike race—with the modest goal of beating the 30-day cutoff. She finished in 24 days and 1 hour, placing sixth, and along the way rode 180 miles in a single day through Wyoming’s Great Basin without a resupply stop. That ride convinced her she belonged at the sport’s toughest events.
This year she returned with a more ambitious goal—to finish in under 20 days—and was well inside that pace when the crash occurred.
Friends reported via GoFundMe that Secreto remains on a ventilator and underwent a second operation on Friday to treat abdominal injuries and internal bleeding. The GoFundMe campaign, launched by close friend Molly Murrow, aims to help cover medical expenses during Secreto’s expected lengthy recovery. More than $67,000 was donated within the first 24 hours.
New Mexico State Police have not released additional details about the crash as the investigation continues.
