One of North America’s most talked about gravel events, Belgian Waffle Ride CA, took place Sunday 28 April in Southern California, with South African Gravel Champion and 3x Cape Epic MTB winner Matthew Beers riding away from the field for 70-miles solo to claim victory.

The 30 year-old gravel and MTB star for team Specialized Off-road finished the 120-mile “unroad” event in 5:28:37, followed by last year’s champion Alexey Vermeulen at 5:29:14 and Petr Vakoc at 5:31:07. Two-time champion (2019 & 2021) Peter Stetina finished fourth in 5:32:48.

Sofia Gomez Villafane, also racing for team Specialized Off-road, won the women’s BWR CA race by a wide margin in 6:15:28, adding another BWR title to her palmarès after winning BWR Utah and BWR Arizona last month. Courtney Sherwell finished second in 6:30:45, with Carol Wreszin earning third place in 6:30:48.

2018 UCI Road World Champion Alejandro Valverde, who switched to gravel racing after retiring from the WorldTour, finished 45th in 6:32:23 after winning the UCI Gravel World Series La Indomable race in Spain one week ago.
