8500 cyclists lined up to start the 14th Mallorca 312 gran fondo early Saturday morning, with multiple world champion Annemiek van Vleuten, wearing honorary bib #312, on the front row, along with former WordTour superstars Alberto Contador, Vincenzo Nibali, Sean Kelly, Pedro Horrillo, Joseba Beloki, Haimar Zubeldia and Maurizio Fondriest.

Cyclists from many different parts of the world came to the Mediterranean island to participate. Among the nationalities making up the largest groups in the 8500 rider peloton were: Spain 27%, United Kingdom 25%, Germany 16% and Belgium at 4%.

The first riders were expected to return from the 167km route and enter the Playa de Muro finish chute at around 11:00 local time, 225km riders at about 13:00 and at approximately 15:15 the first Mallorca 312km rider.

The Czech Roman Locher (Thömus WindowMaster by Wyss Training) was the first Mallorca 312km rider, narrowly defeating Belgian Willem Haspeslagh by 5 seconds with a final time of 8:51:13. Bart Van Damme, also from Belgium, was third in 9:09:13. Sylvia Hermans (granfondoteam.be) won the women’s 312km race by over 30 minutes, finishing in 9:59:15.

Pere Amengual Estarellas of Spain won the 225km event in 6:32:06, with fellow Spaniard Sergio llull Ruiz in second place at 6:39:07 and Lion Trommer of Germany third at 6:42:42. The Italian Lara Rossi was the first woman in 8:01:53.

Spanish cyclist Alejandro Martínez was the first to cross the finish line of the 167-kilometer route with a time of 4:38:39, followed by Spaniard Nelson David López García, and the Polish Wojciech Szczepanik with a time of 4:40:09. In the women’s category, the fastest was Martyna Wisniewska of Poland in 5:15:52, who out-sprinted Amy Philips of the USA in a final dash to the line.
