New Zealand cyclists had the opportunity to ride like professional cyclists on Saturday 14 January at the New Zealand Cycling Classic, the country’s only 2.2 UCI road race.

On the morning of Stage Four of the pro race, amateur riders lined up to ride the Wellington Gran Fondo on the same Miramar Circuit as the pros over distances of 85, 50 or 30 kilometers.

Winner of the 85km gran fondo was Elliot Robertson, the 2021 New Zealand U17 Road Champion. With his birthday occurring the day before the gran fondo, Robertson celebrated turning 18 by narrowly sprinting to victory over four breakaway companions, crossing the finish line with a final time of 2:10:04.1. Scott McDonnell (2:10:04.7) was next, followed by Frank Sutton (2:10:05.4). Colby Raley won the women’s race in 2:26:20.
