The Italian National Anti Doping Organization (NADO) has added 4 years to gran fondo cyclist Christian Barchi’s current suspension after he violated anti-doping rules while serving an 8 year ban from the sport.

NADO found Barchi guilty of doping with Clenbuterol in March 2019 with an in-competition test performed at Gran Fondo Citta di Ancona, where Barchi finished 6th overall. NADO handed the then 28 year-old amateur athlete a 4 year 2 month ban lasting until 16 June 2023.

In March 2020 Barchi was found guilty by NADO of continuing to participate in sporting activities while banned, resulting in another 4 years being added to his original sentence and moving the expiration to 16 June 2027.

Anti Doping Rule 11.14.1 Prohibition Against Participation During Ineligibility or Provisional Suspension states: “No Athlete or other Person who has been declared Ineligible or is subject to a Provisional Suspension may, during a period of Ineligibility or Provisional Suspension, participate in any capacity in a Competition or activity (other than anti-doping Education or rehabilitation programs authorized by NADO Italia) authorized or organized by any Signatory, Signatory’s member organization, or a club or other member organization of a Signatory’s member organization, or in Competitions authorized or organized by any professional league or any international- or national-level Event organization or any elite or national-level sporting activity funded by a governmental agency.”

Now Barchi has once again violated rule 11.14.1 and the terms of his first and second doping convictions, forcing NADO to tack on yet another 4 year ban, meaning Barchi is now banned from the sport until 16 June 2031.

If Barchi continues ignoring anti-doping rules, NADO may consider banning him for life as an incorrigible athlete.

Prior to his first, second and third anti-doping violations, Barchi was a top European gran fondo rider, earning victories at Gran Fondo Pantani 2018, Granfondo Leopardiana 2017, Gran Fondo dei Sibillini 2016 and Highlander Radmarathon 2015, as well as podium positions at Granfondo Internazionale Laigueglia and Gran Fondo San Marino.
