The third edition of the USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championship will take place in Frederick, Maryland on 17 September 2023 after being held in North Carolina in 2021 and 2022.

Event organizer Reuben Kline will hold the timed segment style race on the same course used at Gran Fondo Maryland last weekend. The 97 mile gran fondo course includes a punishing 9133 feet of climbing with several uphill competitive timed segments.

Winners of each age/gender category, those completing all timed segments quickest, will take home an official USA Cycling Stars and Stripes National Champion jersey, as well as a prized gold medal.

To participate riders must first qualify for a starting slot. According to the event website, qualifications slots will be awarded based on rider’s placement in official Gran Fondo National Series® events as listed below or with other qualifying results.

Gran Fondo National Series Results Qualification: In the 18-month period preceding the USA Gran Fondo Cycling National Championships, a rider must achieve 1) A Top 25% finish in an age group in a 100 mile Series Event,  OR 2) A Top 3 finish in an age group category at a 100 mile Series Event, regardless of the number of starters, OR 3) Finish two (2) or more 100 mile Series Events

Riders may also qualify via International UCI Gran Fondo Results by 1) Finishing in the Top 25% in age group category at the 2022 UCI Gran Fondo World Championship  OR 2) Qualifying for the 2023 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships at a UCI Gran Fondo World Series Event.

Riders automatically qualifying include current USA Cycling National Champions and riders who finished in the top three in an age group category at the 2022 USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championship.
