On the last day of the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, 2000 amateur cyclists from 56 nations took to the the start line in Trento, Italy to try and fulfill their dreams of becoming a world cycling champion.
For 20 riders their dream came true.
On a demanding route up, down and around the famous Monte Bondone, the racers tackled 4300 meters vertical on the 143.8 kilometers long gran fondo route and 2218m vertical on the 86.8km long medio fondo for the older age categories.
The overall gran fondo winners – and new world champions – are Austrian Stefan Kirchmair (M19-34) and Germany’s Christina Rausch (W45-49) who were fastest to reach the finish back in Trento. Kirchmair completed the 143.8km route in 4:14:06 and Rausch in 5:02:30.
