Belgian pro cyclist and fan favorite Remco Evenepoel said he will compete in his first gravel race later this month at the mass-participation Belgian Waffle Ride fondo in Kansas, USA.

Event organisers were thrilled and announced the 21 year-old will attend BWR Kansas, “Who’s ready to go trick or treating with these two legends in Kansas? Remco Evenepoel and Mattia Cattaneo will be joining us Halloween for the BWR Kansas.”

The Belgian’s Deceuninck – Quick-Step “Wolfpack” teammate Mattia Cattaneo will join him on the transatlantic off-season trip to also compete in the race on 31 October, the fourth 2021 BWR “Wafflefest” event.

After great attendance at BWR events in California, North Carolina and Utah, Kansas expects 2000 cyclists to start the mass-participation gravel race alongside Evenepoel.  The main 111-mile Waffle route includes plenty of loose sharp gravel to shred tires, single track rock paths to rattle teeth and deep creek crossings to soak shoes – in other words it represents the best of USA gravel racing.

After suffering a serious crash at the 2020 Il Lombardia classic road race, Evenepoel didn’t return to racing until the 2021 Giro d’Italia, where he suffered dearly and lost time on the only stag with gravel.  With more gravel stages coming to Grand Tours in 2022, Evenpoel looks to be honing his gravel skills to go up against Grand Tour champions Pogačar, Bernal and Roglič next year.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to taking selfies and sharing Belgian Waffles with Evenepoel in Kansas.
