The L’Etape by Tour de France worldwide gran fondo series announced it will host add a new event, L’Etape Slovenia, in 2022, taking place on the favorite training routes of two time Tour de France Champion Tadej Pogačar.
The main L’Etape Slovenia event will be a 120 kilometre gran fondo on 4 September in Kranj, just a stones throw from Pogačar’s home in Komenda.
“The amateur Tour de France events involve 24 cities in 21 countries and Slovenia is now a part of this story,” organiser Aleš Hostnik said in a press release, while Kranj Mayor Matjaž Rakovec added “we are very happy that Kranj will host this event.”
The gran fondo route, which has 2000 metres of cumulative elevation gain, will run through the hometowns of Slovenian cycling stars Tadej Pogačar (Komenda) and Matej Mohorič (Podblica) and include some of their favorite training routes.
Mohorič, who will ride the event and is the official L’Etape Slovenia Ambassador, said that Kranj was a great cycling destination, “The roads around here are the most beautiful ones that I’ve ever seen.”
A shorter 70 kilometre medio fondo route with 1100 metres elevation gain will also be offered.
The organiser plans to reveal the final routes for the gran fondo and a medio fondo when registration opens this winter.
