The 2022 edition of the International Gran Fondo La Fausto Coppi will not take place, but organizers insist “It’s not a farewell, just a moment of pause for an event to which we are extremely attached.”
ASD Fausto Coppi, which organizes the spectacular event in the Italian Alps, has for 33 years attracted athletes from all over the world to ride the epic 177 kilometre route with 4125 vertical metres that starts and finishes in Cuneo.
But not next year.
“New professional commitments force us to take a break in 2022,” explained Davide Lauro and Emma Mana, president and vice president of ASD Fausto Coppi. “Otherwise, we would not be able to maintain the high organizational standards to which the many fans of our event are accustomed. The commitment for the event has always been at a voluntary level with over hundred volunteers collaborating each year.”
Specifically, volunteers work to shore-up and maintain the spectacular old mountain roads used for the gran fondo, many of which are currently unsafe and in desperate need of repair. The break will allow volunteers to focus on fixing potholes, restoring retaining walls and making the high alpine roadways safe.
“Since 2014 over 100,000 euros have been spent on the recovery and protection of the high-altitude roads of the Fausto Coppi,” but much more is needed before the event can return according to organisers.
With any luck, and a lot of dedicated volunteers, La Fausto Coppi will relaunch in June 2023.
