The 2021 gran fondo season is off to shaky start with events in Australia, Europe and South America greeting the new year by announcing cancellations due to coronavirus.

With a resurgence of coronavirus in Europe, the amateur Gran Fondo Antalya on 14 February in Turkey has been cancelled in the interest of public safety.  The amateur race will return 13 February 2022.

Former Tour de France champion Cadel Evan’s Swisse People’s Ride gran fondo in Australia, scheduled for 31 January, has also been eliminated from the 2021 gran fondo schedule due to the virus. The race plans to return in 2022.

South America’s Gran Fondo Ruta Del Vino, in the beautiful wine country of Chile, is likewise cancelled as the country battles a 30% increase in virus cases since Christmas.

Other upcoming events at serious risk of cancellation due to increasing virus cases and new government health regulations include Gran Fondo Loana in Italy on 14 February, Gryphon 99er gran fondo in South Afrika on 13 February and the world famous Rock Cobbler gravel ride in California on 13 February.
