The Mazatlan Post is reporting GFNY (Gran Fondo New York) will host Mazatlan’s newest sporting event, GFNY Mazatlan Mexico, on 2 May 2021.
Although GFNY has not yet announced the race, it would be one of twenty GFNY races planned throughout the world next year and the third in Mexico, with GFNY Monterey scheduled for 7 March and GFNY Cozumel on 7 November.
The race would also be the last opportunity for cyclists to qualify for a premium starting position at the annual GFNY World Championship race to be held in New York City on 16 May 2021.
Riders finishing in the top 10% of their age group at GFNY gran fondos automatically qualify for a front-row starting position at the annual New York City race.
Although the official GFNY Mazatlan course has not been announced, participants could expect fast flat segments along the beautiful turquois colored Sea of Cortez, as well as rugged steep climbs high in the Durango Mountains – most famously known as fugitive drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s favorite hideout.
