The recent outbreak of Coronavirus in China has forced the organizers of the Tour of Hainan UCI professional race and associated Gran Fondo Hainan to cancel the events scheduled for February 23 – March 1.

“To avoid the risk of spreading the Coronavirus with the completion of the Hainan Tour road race, and to protect the health and life of athletes, curators, staff, as well as cyclists and spectators, the organizing committee has decided to postpone the race,” they said in a statement.

Hainan is a province in South China located in the South China Sea. It is the smallest and southernmost province of Mainland China, over 800 miles from the Coronavirus epicenter in Hubei.

At press time Hainan has reported 33 confirmed cases of Coronavirus and 1 death.

2020 Tokyo Olympic sports are also making event changes due to Coronavirus.  The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has moved the February 6-9 Olympic qualifiers scheduled in Foshan, China to Belgrade, Serbia on the same dates.

To prevent the spread of Coronavirus, Chinese authorities have taken extreme measures including suspending public events, cancelling school, quarantining large regions and curtailing travel.
