A serious crash involving two riders marred the UCI Gran Fondo Loutraki Greece on Sunday 01 November 2026, leaving an Italian competitor in critical condition.
The incident occurred at the end of the 113.9 km Worlds qualifier, which included around 350 riders. In the final metres an Italian and a British rider went down while sprinting.
Greek media, citing local outlet Korinthos TV, report that the cause has not been officially established. However, video reviewed by Gran Fondo Daily News appears to show a lead rider failing to hold his line and moving into the Italian rider’s path, making contact with his front wheel and bringing him down. The British rider was unable to avoid the fallen Italian and tumbled over him. Video of the crash has circulated online.
EKAB ambulances transported all three riders to Corinth General Hospital. The Italian, reportedly 40 years old, suffered serious head injuries and was intubated. He was subsequently transferred to Gennimatas Hospital in Athens, where Greek media reported that surgery was expected. The British and Cypriot riders were treated in Corinth for orthopaedic fractures, although reports differ on the severity of their injuries.
None of the riders has been named, and six days after the crash, we have received no official comment from local organisers Kyvernitis Sports & Events, UCI Gran Fondo World Series organiser Golazo Sports or the UCI.
The race itself was won by Italy’s Ambrogio Agostino Chiriaco in 02:51:43. Jacopo Frezzato finished second, 2 minutes 24 seconds behind. Germany’s Brigitte Filensky won the women’s race in 03:10:12. The event was a qualifier for the 2027 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Haute-Savoie, France.
Gran Fondo Daily News wishes all three riders a full recovery and will update this story as confirmed information emerges.
