Cho Jin-woo, the South Korean adventure cyclist known to his 66,000 YouTube subscribers as Jin’s Travel, died on Wednesday 04 November after being struck by a cargo truck in El Alto, Bolivia. He was 33.
Bolivian broadcaster Unitel reports that the collision happened at about 09:30 local time. Bystanders rushed to help, but Cho died at the scene. The truck driver fled but was arrested by police a few hours later. He reportedly told officers he had not seen the bicycle. Authorities are investigating.
Cho is believed to have recently crossed from Peru into Bolivia as part of his years-long quest to draw a map of the world by bicycle.
Funeral arrangements are being made with assistance from staff at the Korean Embassy in Bolivia. The family has asked anyone with local knowledge or the means to help to make contact.
Korea Daily profiled Cho earlier this year after he completed roughly 10,000 kilometres across North America, from northeastern Canada to Los Angeles. He then headed south through Mexico and Central America towards Chile.
His 345 videos, known for their stunning cinematography, document his cycling adventures and showcase the kindness of strangers he met along the way. Cho often commented that they were his greatest support.
Fans have filled the comments section under his most recent video, posted just four days before his death, with tributes. Gran Fondo Daily News extends its condolences to his family, friends and followers.
