At the 15th anniversary on Saturday of Gran Fondo Hincapie Greenville, one name on the results sheet stood out: that of a 12-year-old.
Lucca Hincapie, the youngest son of former WorldTour professional George Hincapie and brother of multiple U.S. national champion Enzo, finished ninth in the men’s Medio Fondo in 03:00:45, according to provisional results from South Carolina.
The young racer finished 7 minutes 14 seconds behind winner Fabian Carreno, 40, who took victory in 02:53:31. Lucca crossed the line two-tenths of a second ahead of Steve Ross, 59, and 1 minute 32 seconds ahead of Jamie Houck, 47. The top eight finishers were all aged 21 or older, including 66-year-old David Tucker, who finished fifth.
At the front of the Medio Fondo, the battle for the remaining podium places was also close. Neal Coughlin, 41, finished second, 1 minute 14 seconds behind Carreno, while Brandon Highsmith, 48, took third, 1 minute 33 seconds back. Paige Yanity, 29, won the women’s Medio Fondo in 03:15:47.
In the Gran Fondo, Kate Powlison, 41, was fastest overall and claimed the women’s title in 04:03:59, finishing 8 minutes 48 seconds ahead of Errin Mackridge, 19. Will Gleason, 33, won the men’s race in 04:11:42, beating Matthew List, 29, by 4 minutes 17 seconds.
Based at Hotel Domestique, the event was first held in 2012 and has become a fixture on the American gran fondo calendar. The season-ending event typically sells, attracting more than 2,000 riders to the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in autumn each year.
