The UCI and the Saudi Cycling Federation announced on Friday 16 October that the 2026 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships would not proceed, just over two weeks before the scheduled opening day.
The last-minute cancellation of the BMX Freestyle and Trials championships, planned for 03–07 November 2026, followed the UCI’s assessment of recent regional developments and their impact on event logistics.
The move comes after missile attacks on King Khalid International Airport, the main arrival point for riders and staff.
Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility for a strike on Saturday 10 October that killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 300. Further reports indicate that the airport was hit in separate attacks over the following ten days.
Pressure had been building. Australia withdrew its team on safety grounds, and the UCI’s cancellation followed soon afterwards. Several other national cycling federations had also begun withdrawing their teams.
The decision is a blow for a young discipline. Riyadh hosted the November 2025 edition, attracting more than 230 riders from 40 countries. Spain won the inaugural trials mixed team title.
Urban cycling includes BMX Freestyle events in Park and Flatland formats, while Trials tests balance, precision and control over obstacles. Unlike traditional road racing, which focuses on speed and endurance, these urban disciplines reward creativity, control and technical skill.
It remains unclear whether the UCI will reschedule the event or cancel it entirely for 2026. The governing body has promised a further update on the sporting consequences.
