Home favourite Hugo Drechou held off a fast-finishing Thomas Champion to win the 100km Gran Fondo at the second edition of the 66 Degrés Sud – Pyrénées Catalanes Gravel Tour on Saturday, the final gravel worlds qualifier before October’s UCI World Championships in Nannup, Australia.
Racing for Gravel Nation, Drechou stopped the clock in 02:59:16 on a course that climbed 2,286 metres via the Col du Calvaire and a punishing late ascent of Pic de la Calma at 2,006 metres.
Champion crossed the line just 20 seconds adrift. Former WorldTour professional Petr Vakoč, who rode for Quick-Step and Alpecin-Fenix and now races for Factor Racing, completed the podium 2 minutes 53 seconds back, with Quentin Pacher and Aleksandr Grigorev filling out the top five in the same time.
Germany’s Rosa Klöser (Canyon SRAM MAAP), the 2024 Unbound Gravel 200 champion, dominated the women’s elite race, soloing to victory in 03:21:48. Nicole Frain was second, 14 minutes 37 seconds back, with Dutch rider Teuntje Beekhuis third at 21 minutes 37 seconds.
In the shorter 77km Medio Fondo, 17-year-old Baptiste Danoy took the outright win in 02:48:10 ahead of Nicolas Gras. Silvia Zuñiga Garcia was the leading woman, finishing 13th overall.
