Junior cyclist Cesare Bonvegna, 16, of Team Bike Siracusa, died in a road accident on Thursday 17 September 2026 in Mazzarrà Sant’Andrea, in the Italian province of Messina, Sicily.
The collision happened at about 18:00 on State Road 185. According to initial reports, Bonvegna was on a training ride toward Novara di Sicilia when he collided with a car driven by a woman traveling in the opposite direction. Emergency crews reached the scene quickly, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Carabinieri from the Furnari station, supported by the Radiomobile unit from Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, are investigating the circumstances of the crash and any potential responsibility. The cause of the collision has not been established. The driver is expected to be registered as a suspect for road homicide, while the vehicles involved have been seized and remain available to judicial authorities.
Bonvegna lived in Terme Vigliatore and raced as a junior for Team Bike Siracusa. He began his cycling career with ASD Ciclistica Terme before joining the Siracusa club, and was regarded as one of Sicily’s promising young riders. He was a student at the Copernico institute in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto.
Team Bike Siracusa said it was devastated by his death, remembering his enthusiasm, passion and exemplary manners and expressing its closeness to his parents, brother and loved ones. The Italian Cycling Federation also published a tribute to Bonvegna. Condolences have come from his school, local institutions and sports groups.
