A 58-year-old resident of an upscale Florida retirement community has been sentenced to 90 days in jail after pleading no contest to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a roadside confrontation with two cyclists.
Jill Allison Vernon was arrested on Sunday 22 March 2026 after officers from the Fruitland Park Police Department responded to reports that a white Mercedes convertible had repeatedly threatened two cyclists riding near Vernon’s residence on Conservation Trail in the Village of Pine Hills, part of The Villages retirement community in Lake County.
According to the arrest affidavit, cited by WKMG, Vernon passed the cyclists at high speed, then returned and forced one rider onto the grass before swerving toward the second cyclist near a driveway. Officers determined that Vernon was the primary aggressor and attempted to arrest her, but she fled into her home and resisted before being handcuffed. Body-worn camera footage captured the arrest.
The Florida incident came just two weeks after another confrontation between a motorist and cyclists in Cutler Bay, near Miami. On Saturday 22 August, a driver allegedly swerved a black SUV toward a group ride before a passenger or driver allegedly opened fire. No cyclists were injured, and police later arrested a 40-year-old man who was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm from a vehicle.
Court records show that Vernon pleaded no contest to the aggravated assault charge. In addition to the 90-day jail sentence, she was ordered to complete 150 hours of community service. She had also faced a charge of resisting an officer without violence.
