Amateur Strava KOM hunter Rowan Barrett (Cannondale Echelon p/b 4iiii) claimed overall victory at the 115km Granfondo San Gottardo on Sunday 23 August, topping the route’s three timed climbs through the Swiss Alps in 02:08:23. The 54kg featherweight Canadian, who claims over 3,000 Strava KOM’s, was fastest on all three — the historic cobbled Tremola ascent of the Gotthard Pass, the Furka Pass and the brutal final climb of the Nufenen Pass.
Swiss rider Johan Fayet finished second, 1 minute 24 seconds behind Barrett, edging compatriot Johnathon Ackroyd (RSC Regensdorf) into third by just 2 minutes 2 seconds. Daniel Wahler and Alex Aranburu, both representing Switzerland, rounded out the men’s top five.
In the women’s race, Germany’s Lisa Stein (Lexi Smartsuits) took the win in 02:24:24, holding off compatriot Emilia Welte by 3 minutes 25 seconds. Switzerland’s Verena Koester finished third, with Germans Valeria Einstein and Ellen Rohing completing the top five. It capped a strong summer for Stein, who won the women’s race at the Colnago GF Mont Ventoux on 7 June, beating France’s Marie-Morgane Le Deunfi by 5 minutes 33 seconds over the summit-finish route — a result that makes her San Gottardo victory the second marquee European climbers’ granfondo she has won this season.
The challenging 115-kilometre-long course, with roughly 3,200 metres of climbing, drew a field of just under 400 riders.
