Italian climber Giovanni Carboni has been handed a four-year suspension by the International Testing Agency (ITA) after a tribunal found him guilty of an anti-doping rule violation linked to Athlete Biological Passport abnormalities.

The ITA confirmed on Monday 03 August that, following a full hearing in which it represented the UCI, an independent tribunal ruled that Carboni had committed an anti-doping rule violation for the use of a prohibited substance or method under Article 2.2 of the UCI Anti-Doping Rules. The 30-year-old is now ineligible to participate in sport in any capacity until 10 September 2029. All results he achieved from the start of the Tour de Langkawi on 29 September 2024 onward have been disqualified.

Carboni, born in Fano, was provisionally suspended by the UCI in September 2025 after abnormalities in his Athlete Biological Passport were identified, stemming from his 2024 season with the Japanese Continental JCL UKYO team. During that campaign, he won the overall title and two stages at the Tour of Japan, as well as a stage of the Tour of Bulgaria.

In 2025 he stepped-up to the ProTeam level with Unibet Tietema Rockets of France, but the team suspended him immediately after being notified of the case. The team, since rebranded as Unibet Rose Rockets, terminated his contract on Saturday 13 December 2025, citing a breach of its values of transparency and clean sport.

As a U23 developmental rider for Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè, Carboni briefly held the best young rider’s white jersey at the 2019 Giro d’Italia. He retains the right to appeal the tribunal’s decision before the Swiss based Court of Arbitration for Sport.
