Michele Ambrosi, a 39-year-old amateur cyclist and multi-sport athlete from Anagni, in Italy’s Lazio region, has died four days after being struck by a car while training during a holiday in Puglia.
The collision occurred on the morning of Friday 24 July 2026 in Campomarino di Maruggio, a seaside town in the province of Taranto, where Ambrosi was vacationing with his wife, Rita, and their two young children. He suffered severe injuries in the impact and was taken by emergency services to Giannuzzi Hospital in Manduria before being transferred in critical condition to Santissima Annunziata Hospital in Taranto.
Despite intensive care efforts, his condition deteriorated, and doctors confirmed brain death. He died on Tuesday 28 July 2026.
Local authorities have not made any arrests and are investigating the exact circumstances of the crash, including reviewing footage from area surveillance cameras.
Ambrosi was an active competitor on the regional gran fondo circuit this season. Timing data from Krono Service lists three 2026 results in the men’s M2 category: Granfondo Rerum Novarum in Carpineto Romano (16th), Granfondo Internazionale Città di Fara in Sabina (23rd), and Granfondo Città di Subiaco, where he recorded his best result, finishing 12th in his category. Friends and his social media also point to a broader multi-sport background, including a finish at Ironman Italy in 2021.
In a gesture the family described as an act of generosity amid tragedy, they authorized organ donation, offering hope to patients awaiting transplants. It also serves as a gentle reminder for cyclists to discuss their organ donation wishes with their family and, where available, record their preferences through a driver’s license registry or advance health care directive.
