Hundreds of cyclists competing in the IRONMAN Hamburg European Championship on Sunday 07 June 2026 saw their races unravel after encountering metal fragments scattered across a section of the bike course, prompting a police investigation into what authorities describe as possible intentional sabotage.
The incident occurred in the Kirchwerder area of Hamburg during the 180km cycling leg. Police recovered hundreds of small metal shavings and fragments from the roadway after reports of widespread punctures began flooding in from competitors. Initial police reports confirmed at least 50 complaints of flat tires, while race and media sources suggested the total number of punctures may have reached 400.
Authorities have launched an investigation into suspected attempted dangerous bodily harm and multiple counts of property damage. At least one athlete reportedly crashed in the affected section and suffered a fracture requiring hospital treatment, although investigators have not yet determined whether a puncture caused the fall.
Despite discussions about a possible suspension, organizers allowed the race to continue. Many competitors were forced to stop repeatedly to repair tires, while others saw their hopes of qualification for future championship events go flat and disappear on the roadside.
The disruption adds another chapter to the event’s challenging history. Hamburg has previously faced serious incidents during major triathlon competition, including the fatal motorcycle collision that occurred during the 2023 European Championship.
Investigators are appealing for witnesses who may have observed suspicious activity along the course on the evening before or overnight prior to the race.
