Portuguese cycling’s ongoing anti-doping crisis has taken another turn with the sanction of Francisco Guerreiro by the Portuguese Anti-Doping Agency (ADoP), adding to a growing list of riders caught up in recent investigations and controls.

Guerreiro, a 25 year old domestic-level rider with links to teams competing on the Portuguese pro-am circuit, has been handed a four-year ban following an Anti-Doping Rule Violation tied to the use of a prohibited substance. ADoP has not disclosed the full analytical findings and details of the case.

The case adds further strain to a national scene already reeling from repeated scandals. Portuguese cycling has faced sustained scrutiny since the fallout of the 2022 “Operação Prova Limpa” investigation, which exposed systematic doping practices and led to numerous suspensions and criminal proceedings.

Recent months have seen a steady stream of sanctions. As previously reported, multiple riders were banned in January, followed by a team-wide suspension in March after further irregularities emerged. The accumulation of cases has raised concerns among governing bodies about structural issues within the sport in Portugal.

Francisco Guerreiro’s name also draws attention due to his familial link to WorldTour rider Ruben Guerreiro, who earlier this season denied allegations related to whereabouts failures and anti-doping compliance. (Domestique Cycling)

While there is no suggestion of shared wrongdoing, the overlap underscores the heightened scrutiny currently surrounding Portuguese riders at all levels.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to intensified testing and education programs. However, with each new case, confidence in the domestic peloton continues to erode, leaving Portuguese cycling searching for much needed credibility and stability.
