The case against the man accused of striking Texas 16-year-old competitive cyclist Walker Carroll and fleeing the scene took a dramatic turn on Thursday when a McLennan County grand jury handed down two serious felony indictments.
Adam Lynn Wiley, 47, was indicted on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and vehicle involved in collision/failure to stop and render aid. Both charges, originally second-degree felonies, were enhanced to first-degree felonies — punishable by up to life in prison — due to Wiley’s previous conviction for assault family violence with a prior conviction.
At the time of the alleged incident, Wiley was already out on bond following a 2022 arrest for assault family violence and facing a 2023 charge of possession of a methamphetamine, according to McLennan County Sheriff’s Office jail records.
Judge Susan Kelly of 54th State District Court has now increased his total bond to 2.5 million USD, after Wiley failed to appear for a scheduled court hearing. His attorney cited a chemotherapy appointment. He remains jailed at the McLennan County Detention Center.
Walker, a Texas state champion mountain bike racer, was training for a race when struck from behind by a pickup truck on Friday 06 February 2026, leaving him critically injured on the roadside. After multiple brain and spinal surgeries, his recovery has been rocky but encouraging, according to updates on the Carroll family’s CaringBridge page —which has now recorded over 70,000 visits.
Wiley’s attorney has confirmed awareness of the indictment and stated that discovery will form the foundation of his client’s defence.
