The second edition of L’Etape Las Vegas by Tour de France was cancelled due to high-wind and dangerous weather conditions just hours before the planned start Sunday morning 5 May in the USA.

“We are extremely disappointed to announce the cancellation of L’Etape Las Vegas by Tour de France,” said organizer Tim Keener. “We have been in consultation with local officials and followed the models presented by the National Weather Service as of 5 p.m. today. Due to the forecasted high winds above the allowable thresholds, we had no choice but to cancel the event for the safety of the riders, staff, volunteers and vendors.”

Over 500 cyclists from 30 states and 8 countries traveled to the desert city of Las Vegas to ride the 75-mile gran fondo route through famed Red Rock Canyon, where winds were expected upwards of 75mph on Sunday.

While other L’Etape events offer good refund polices due to cancellation, L’Etape Las Vegas indicated participants will not be refunded their $200 entry fee, but riders will automatically be registered for a future edition. As always, Gran Fondo Daily recommends cyclists review refund policies prior to registering so they do not get ripped-off.

The Lovers & Friends music festival with 60,000 attendees was also cancelled for just hours before the one-day show was to take place on the Las Vegas Strip. Though, unlike L’Etape Las Vegas, ticket holders will receive a full refund.
