NADO Italia has announced the provisional suspension of three amateur cyclists for anti-doping violations.

Sergio Zaottini, 46, riding for the Italian Faga Zama Team, has been accused of returning a positive anti-doping test result for the banned substance Clostebol after a check ordered by NADO. On 10 March Zaottini won the 25th Coppa Carnevale 45+ age group race. Clostebol is a synthetic anabolic steroid that helps increase Testosterone and is normally prescribed to treat ophthalmological, dermatological and gynecological conditions. Numerous amateur cyclists have tested positive for the drug in recent years.

Pasquale Di Monaco, 54, a member of team Giuliodori Renzo, has been accused of testing positive for the banned substance Clomifene in an anti-doping check ordered by NADO. Di Monaco most recently finished 30th at the Trofeo San Giuseppe amateur race for masters age cyclists. Clomiphene is normally prescribed for the treatment of female infertility, but some male athletes use it to stimulate Testosterone production. It is banned at all times by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Simone Cecarini, who raced in the 45-49 year-old men’s category last year for team Torello Bike, is accused of testing positive for the banned substance Methoxy Polyethylene Glycol in an anti-doping check ordered by NADO. As an erythropoietin stimulating agent, Methoxy Polyethylene Glycol-epoetin beta is prescribed to treat anemia in adults with chronic kidney disease by stimulating the production of red blood cells, thereby improving delivery of oxygen to muscles.

Pending a court hearing and final verdict by the Italian National Anti-Doping Tribunal, all three are suspended from participating in sport in any capacity.
