Wearing his big brother’s European Championship helmet, Tomas Colbrelli, 27, won the 129km race at the BGY Airport Granfondo in Bergamo, Italy on Sunday. Younger brother of the famous Sonny Colbrelli, European Champion and winner of Paris-Roubaix, borrowed the one-of-a-kind helmet to wear at the race for good luck.
It worked like a charm.
Colbrelli (ASD Domain) used the family’s famous “Colbrelli Sprint” to defeat Federico Brevi and Samuele Chiappast in the final meters, all three scored with a time of 3:29:06. Luisa Isonni (ASD Boario) won for the women in 3:55:33.
“I’ve only been riding for two years, before in my free time I dedicated myself to football. Discovering the bicycle allowed me to understand the great effort that real cyclists do.” Tomas Colbrelli told BICITV.it afterwards.
Sunday’s victory was not the first for the younger Colbrelli, he won Gran Fondo Avasani in 2022.
On the 162km gran fondo route Manuel Senni (Team Crainox) scored his second in a row win at the event, covering the route in 4:33:27 at an average pace of 35.57kmh. Just behind, and finishing second once again, was the Frenchman Loic Ruffaut, followed by Federico Pozzecco two minutes later. Maria Elena Palmisano (Garda Scott Matergia) won the women’s category in 5:10:47.
The best riders on the short 89km route were Fabio Fadini and Sonia Opi for the men and women respectively.
Over 2000 amateur cyclists participated the 25th version of the event, formerly the Felice Gimondi Granfondo.
