Despite a cold drenching rain in Italy’s lake district on Sunday 9 October, over 1700 amateurs, representing 43 nations of the world, wrapped up the Italian season at Gran Fondo Il Lombardia wearing wet weather gear. The 113.5 kilometers long route started and ended in Cantu, with the well-known Sormano Wall and historical Ghisallo climbs (and slippery descents) tearing the peloton apart in between.

The podium of the men’s race had Pietro Dutto (Team Mentecorpo) standing on the tallest step at the end with a finishing time of 3:09:48. Frenchman Loic Ruffaut (3:09:55) was in second place and Italian Rossano Mauti (3:10:01) third.

For the women it was 2021 Haute Route Alps champion Luise Valentin of Denmark who sloshed to victory in 3:36:53, over eight minutes up on German Rebi Robisch (3:45:12) and twelve minutes ahead of Italian Sonia Passuti (3:49:18).

On Saturday riding over the same beautiful roads covered in autumn leaves, multiple Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar won the professional version of the race, the Tour of Lombardy, for a second time in a row.
