Zapopan-Guadalajara, Mexico hosted the inaugural GFNY Zapopan gran fondo for 1500 competitors on Sunday 2 October 2022 with a 129 kilometers long race course.

With an elevation gain of only 875 meters, a winning time of 2:45:18 and an average pace just under 47km/hr, the race was the fastest GFNY event ever held in Mexico.

With a rocket-like start, two riders from Team Petrolike went on the attack: Jose Ramon Muñiz Vazquez and former Giro d’Italia stage winner Miguel Angel Rubiano Chavez. An elite chase group included top Mexican riders Miguel Arroyo and former Israel Cycling Academy pro Luis Lemus, who dug deep to bridge across to the front duo.

They never closed the gap and at the end, rather than playing Rock Paper Scissors to decide the winner, the 20 year-old Muñiz who took the win in a tight sprint finish against his 38 year-old teammate Rubiano. 17 seconds later Arroyo (2:45:35) rounded out the podium in third place.

In the women’s race, GFNY Bogota champion Ana Rios from Colombia took her second GFNY win this year in 3:00:38. Karen Villamizar (3:00:38) and GFNY Monterrey champion Marcela Prieto (3:00:39) completed the podium.

GFNY racing now moves to Ecuador on 9 October at GFNY Marathon Quito.
