03 July 2022 UPDATE: Enzo Hincapie has won the 2022 USA Cycling National Road and Criterium Championships for is age category – story HERE.
In the world of competitive cycling when your last name is Hincapie the pressure is on to perform.
On Saturday, 13 year-old Enzo Hincapie, son of Tour de France legendary super domestique George Hincapie, did not disappoint. Although wearing bib #34 while his father wore #1, Enzo stole the show, riding away with all the accolades at his father’s namesake gran fondo in Chattanoga, Tennessee USA.
Enzo won the 130 kilometer with 1250 meters vertical Gran Fondo Hincapie Chattanooga amateur race by out sprinting his breakaway companions in the final meters.
From a field of 400 riders, most two, three, four and some five times as old as Enzo, his finishing time was 3:36:24.9, just 0.2 seconds in front of 30 year-old A.J. Meyer and 1 second up on William Stewart and Philly Williams. Riding as world class domestiques for Enzo, dad and ex-pro Bobby Julich finished sixth and fifth respectively.
This is Enzo’s second outstanding performance in less than a week. Last weekend he announced his presence in the amateur ranks loudly, with a strong 11th place finish at the Athen’s Twilight amateur race in Georgia in front of large, loud and slightly drunk crowd, where he was the youngest competitor ever in the history of the event.
We would not be surprised to see Enzo wearing bib #1 soon, very soon.
