The 2022 Swiss gran fondo season got a lot smaller in recent weeks after the cancellation of two big races.

The organising committee for Cyclosportive des Vins du Valais in the Valais wine region announced it will cancel the 10th edition planned in August and end the event – permanently. The popular alpine event, offering routes of 75, 115 and 130 kilometers (with 2300 meters climbing), attracted over 1000 amateur cyclists each year.

Also canceling, but hoping to return in 2023, is L’Etape Switzerland by Tour de France. The local promoter announced that due to a chain of unfortunate circumstances they cannot secure a suitable race course on 11 September 2022.

Competition from two other Swiss events (Bodensee Radmarathon and La Jolidon Classique), scheduled on the same weekend, as well as poor reviews from participants saying the event it is not worthy of the ”L’Etape” label might also play a part in the organizer’s decision to cancel.
