The Italian Gran Fondo Matildica has been awarded the 2022 UEC European Cycling Union Gran Fondo Championships for amateur cyclists and will host the race as part of the event’s 50th edition in July.
On 17 July in Reggio Emilia amateur riders from all across the European Union are expected to participate and compete for the title of UEC European Champion in various age group categories. The top three gran fondo and medio fondo riders in each category will be awarded UEC medals, with first place also winning a prized blue-white-yellow UEC Champion jersey.
The storied amateur race starts and finishes in the historic center of Reggio Emilia, surrounded by ancient walls and buildings from the 16th–17th centuries. Although the event starts on flat terrain, the course starts climbing quickly. The gran fondo race covers 145 kilometers and almost 2700 vertical metres, while the 115 kilometres medio fondo race includes 1480 vertical metres of climbing.
The Medio Fondo will compete for UEC European Champion titles in the following Women and Men categories: 50+, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65+.
The Gran Fondo will compete for UEC European Champion titles in the following Women and Men categories: 19-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-50.
The event is capped at 2500 competitors and is expected to sell-out. Online registration is now available and will close 15 July or when sold-out. Complete UEC European Championship rules, technical guides, route profiles and online registration information HERE.
