The amateur cycling center of the world this week is in East Sarajevo, which is hosting 1800 athletes from 50 countries at the 2021 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. Amateur cyclists are competing in four events over five days, with the Individual Time Trial taking place first.
On Wednesday at 13:00 local time 242 riders started at 30 second intervals to race individually against the clock on a 19.2 kilometre course in the city of Pale under cloudy skies.
Fastest on the day and crowned 2021 UCI Amateur World Time Trial Champion was Frenchman Laurent Derain, competing in the 40-44 year-old Men’s category he finished in 25:20.9 at an average speed of 45.5 km/h.
Also in the 40-44 age category, Cecilia Hansen from Sweden earned a World Champion title as well with the fastest Women’s time of 28:32.1 at an average speed of 40.4 km/h.

The next event is on Thursday when mixed teams from each country will compete in a relay race around the city center. Then on Saturday the older category riders will compete in the Medio Fondo road race, while younger riders will ride a Gran Fondo on Sunday.
