This week the Management Committee of the UCI, the world governing body of cycling, announced the creation of an amateur UCI Gravel World Series and Gravel World Championships modeled on the UCI Gran Fondo World Series.
The UCI will partner with Belgian event organiser Golazo Sports, who manages the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, to create the UCI Gravel World Series of mass-participation races as well as the new annual UCI Gravel World Championships.
“A new discipline, gravel, will join the UCI Cycling for All International Calendar in 2022. From next year, the UCI will organise – in collaboration with events organiser Golazo – a UCI Gravel World Series consisting of events enabling athletes to qualify for the UCI Gravel World Championships,” UCI President David Lappartient said.
Details will be forthcoming as no rules governing the gravel events or what events will be part of the 2022 Gravel World Series were included with the announcement.
