Edmonton, Alberta is set to host the first Canadian L’Etape gran fondo race for amateur cyclists on 14 August 2022 when Tour de France organiser A.S.O., the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Explore will host L’Étape Canada by Tour de France.
“Edmonton Events is honoured to partner with L’Étape Canada by Tour de France to bring the atmosphere of the world’s greatest cycling event to our region,” said Janelle Janis, Director of Edmonton Events. “We look forward to showing off our beautiful city to thousands of international amateur athletes, officials and spectators and delivering on our reputation as a premier sporting event destination.”
Part of the L’Etape by Tour de France wordwide race series that includes 21 events in 2022, the event offers amateur cyclists across the globe the thrill of authentic Tour de France-style racing.
The main race will be a 160 kilometre gran fondo on fully closed and semi-closed paved roads around Edmonton with course details yet to be released. Participants will receive professional timing, on-route nutrition and mechanical support, a custom event jersey and a pro-like start/finish for the ultimate Tour de France experience.
Just like at every L’Etape event, yellow L’Etape Champion jerseys will be awarded to the fastest riders in each age group with KOM red polka dot jerseys awarded to the best climbers.
L’Étape Canada joins L’Étape San Antonio Texas as the newest L’Etape races in North America, which already has several very popular L’Etape Mexico races.
