Swiss Gran fondo cyclists were treated to a surprise appearance by former Olympic champion Fabian Cancellara at the 10th edition of the Gran Fondo San Gottardo.

With rain in the forecast turnout was low at the start in Ambrì, but 300 diehard cyclists from 21 nations were present when Cancellara rolled up to he start line for selfies and autographs.  Soon afterwards the field left to ride one of three different routes (113, 53 or 42 kilometres), all including an ascent of the legendary cobbled Tremola.  The longest route also included ascents of Gottardo, Furka and Nufenen passes between Ticino, Uri and Valais.

The absolute best time on the long route was 4:37:01 by Arnaud Tissieres with Annick Baur the best women at 5:33:18.  On the 53 kilometre medio fondo route Michele Lardi was the fastest male, finishing in 2:18:50, followed shortly by the fastest women, Jacqueline Uebelhart, in 2:41:41.

Fabian Cancellara finished in 2:49:38 on the 53 kilometre medio fondo route.
