Bad news keeps rolling in for the 2021 UCI Gran Fondo World Series.
Today, the UCI Gran Fondo Isle of Man world championship qualifying race announced it will not be part of the 2021 UCI Gran Fondo World Series and is postponing the race until 4-5 September.
The new date is on the final day of the 2021 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships taking place in Banjaluka, Bosnia-Hervgovina.
Gran Fondo Isle of Man was originally scheduled for 1 August, just in time to qualify British riders for the 2021 World Championships if they finished in the top 20% of their age group. Due to the ongoing pandemic and the current border restrictions on the Isle of Man, the organiser made the difficult decisions to take the event out of the 2021 UCI Gran Fondo World Series.
Now, both UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying events scheduled in the United Kingdom will not qualify any riders for the 2021 World Championships after UCI Tour of Cambridgeshire also withdrew from the series.
Historically, the United Kingdom qualifies and sends the most riders to the UCI Gran Fondo World Championship. In 2019 they sent 478, more than twice any other country.
