With almost 3 months until his namesake event, Schleck Gran Fondo, former pro cyclist Fränk Schleck has cancelled the springtime race and withdrawn the event from the 2021 UCI Gran Fondo World Series due to the pandemic.
“With no visibility into the future health context, it is impossible for us to guarantee the organization of the Schleck Gran Fondo 2021 as initially planned in may 2021,” he announced.
The very popular event brings over 3000 cyclists to Luxemburg to try and qualify for the annual UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.
Schleck has provisionally set a new autumn date for the event, 25 September, but it will not qualify riders for the 2021 Gran Fondo World Championships schedule to take place a month earlier in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Registered riders will automatically be transferred to the 25 September event or they may contact Schleck prior to 10 April for a refund.
Other 2021 UCI Gran Fondo World Series races postponed, rescheduled or withdrawn from the series due to the ongoing pandemic are Tour of Cambridgeshire GBR (withdrawn), Niseko Classic JPN (withdrawn), Gran Fondo Coimbra POR (withdrawn), Aristoteles – Chalkidiki Gran Fondo GRC (rescheduled 8/29), Tour of Bintan IDN (postponed), Cypus Gran Fondo CYP (postponed), Gran Fondo Antalya TUR (postponed) and Around Samcheok Gran Fondo KOR (postponed).
