Amateur French cyclists were hoping for a bright sunny start to the 2021 cyclosportive season this weekend at the Gran Prix de Perpignan along the Mediterranean coast.
Unfortunately, coronavirus and the government have cast a dark cloud over the opening event, Gran Prix de Perpignan, not only forcing it to cancel, but also forcing the second race, Perpignan – Saint Estève on 6 February, to cancel.
At the last moment, the French government notified the organizer (Velosoleil / Roussillon Animations) of the cancellation with a simple direct statement, “Pending new official announcements concerning sport, ‘general public’ competitions are not currently authorized in space. public, on public roads or sports routes.”
Velosoleil / Roussillon Animations hopes to reschedule both races in May.
